In August, I had the opportunity to return to Tuscany, one of Italy’s top travel destinations and a place I had been longing to revisit.
It’s no secret that Italy isn’t short of stunning locations. But there’s something about Tuscany’s ethereal scenes, the warm light drenched over Tuscan hills, a landscape peppered with cypress trees, medieval hill towns and sprawling vineyards, that makes nowhere else quite like it.
A trip to Tuscany will make you re-evaluate how much wine and pasta one person can consume in a week, the architecture in the speculatular cities will make you swoon and if renaissance art-filled museums are your jam, then nearby city of Florence is definitely the place for you.
Our Airbnb villa in the countryside surrounding Montespertoli, in the heart of Chianti country, served as a perfect base for exploring the vineyards and natural beauty of the region, as well as being convenient for day trips to Florence, San Gimignano and Lucca.
A real highlight for me was our wine tour and tasting at Castello Sonnino, with its thirteenth century tower, overlooking the valleys of Florentine Chianti. Here, for over two centuries, the Sonnino family has been producing wines and extra-virgin olive oils of impeccable character.
We spent a blissful afternoon here. Set amidst trellises of wistaria, fragola grapes and clumps of lavender, we learned of the castle’s fascinating history. A visit down into the historic wine cellars was followed by a tasting and local cuisine in the delightful Sonnino Restaurant. The whole place had an incredibly warm and friendly atmosphere, we honestly couldn’t have wished for a more inviting Tuscan wine tasting experience.
I’ve shared some photos from our recent trip to Tuscany in the post below. I do hope it serves as inspiration for your own Tuscan adventure.
Breathtaking views ….
