During our trip to the Dolomites, we opted to spend a night in Verona, Italy before flying back home. Having never visited before, and always keen to experience a charming Italian city, we booked in for a night to explore.
Perched on the banks of the Adige River, Verona is a historic, energetic city packed full of Italian charm. With an easily walkable old town and pretty streets to roam, this most romantic of Italian cities had us wishing we could stay much longer. You could easily spend a long weekend here, taking your time to enjoy its pretty piazzas, stunning architecture and the incredible food and wines from the Veneto region – only a short distance from the shores of Lake Garda.
We began our explorations crossing the ornate Castle Vecchio Bridge, providing wonderful views downriver. Continuing into the heart of the city, we wandered the centro storico (old town), admiring the beautiful buildings, towers and squares, pausing for afternoon Bellinis in the touristy but incredibly picturesque Piazza delle Erbe.
For an afternoon stroll, we crossed the Pietra bridge and headed up the hill towards Castel St Pietro, a striking medieval fortress set high above the city, with beautiful tree-lined avenues surrounding it. After taking photos of the incredible view over the city, we ambled back via Piazza della Bra, the home of the gigantic Verona Area, an amazingly well-preserved 1st century amphitheatre. For our final night in Italy, we dined at Alcova del Frate, a delightful spot we stumbled across earlier in the day near to Ponte Pietra.
